David Scarlatescu has called Vernon home since he was eight years old. This is the city that raised him. He grew up here, built a life, and started a family of his own. At nineteen, he bought The Fig, a small restaurant in the heart of downtown, and has spent the years since building it into a fixture of the community he loves. Alongside running The Fig, David also co-operates Millennium Valley Productions, a local film company. David has spent years showing up for Vernon, delivering meals to homebound seniors, feeding evacuees and firefighters during wildfire season, and supporting the local causes that keep this city strong. He's running for City Council because he believes in walking the walk: showing up for Vernon the same way it's shown up for him. He wants to bring a practical, accessible voice to City Hall, focused on a strong local economy, smart growth, and making sure the next generation has real reasons to build their lives here.
Vernon's downtown works because small business owners show up every day and make it work. David wants City Hall to be a partner to local business, not an obstacle. That means cutting red tape where it doesn't serve a purpose and making sure the people who invest in this city can actually build something here.
Too many young people who grow up in Vernon feel like they have to leave to build a life. David wants a council that takes that seriously, backing the jobs, housing, and recreation opportunities that give the next generation a real reason to stay and put down roots here.
Vernon is growing, and how it grows matters. David supports development that adds housing and strengthens infrastructure without erasing what makes this city feel like home. That's growth planned with residents, not around them.
David has spent years working alongside Vernon's non-profits, volunteers, and neighbours in need. He'll bring that same hands-on approach to council, showing up for the everyday issues that affect quality of life, from public safety to supporting the organizations that hold this community together.
Residents shouldn't need an appointment to be heard. David is committed to being reachable, open to questions, honest about what one councillor can and can't deliver, and accountable to the people who elected him.
Vernon's future depends on how well we protect the natural resources that make this city worth living in: our lakes, our orchards, our outdoor spaces, and the water that supports all of it. That's especially real right now. Vernon is in the middle of Stage 3 water restrictions. It's affecting neighbours, growers, and small businesses today, not in some distant future. David believes sustainability has to be part of how the city plans, not an afterthought. That means factoring water capacity and long-term resource limits into growth and development decisions, and making sure Vernon's natural spaces are protected as the city continues to change. This city's economy, its food supply, and its character are all tied to the same resources, and council needs to treat them that way.
